How to Remove Razor Bumps
By David Lessem
Overview
Razor bumps occur in the hair follicles themselves. When the razor cuts your hairs very close, it can cut them at a sharp angle inside the follicles. This can cause the hairs to not properly grow out of the follicles, or to grow into nearby follicles, both of which irritate the follicles and cause inflammations. Since people who get razor bumps tend to get them every time they shave, the key is prevention more than treatment. Nonetheless, there are things that you can do to treat razor bumps once you get them.
Step 1
Lather your face well before shaving to soften up the hairs. Shave with the grain to avoid getting too close a shave.
Step 2
Consider switching to an electric razor. Electric razors tend to give a straight, even cut that is not quite as close as safety razors, which reduces razor burn.
Step 3
Wait a few days before shaving again. If you have bad razor bumps, they will usually go away if you leave them alone for a bit. Shaving again right away will exacerbate them.
Step 4
Rub in a salicylic acid rub to unblock your follicles (see Resources below). You may also want to apply some rubbing alcohol to dry them out if your face is oily.
Step 5
Wash your face using a loofah or other mildly abrasive scrubber to remove the blockages the salicylic acid loosened.
Step 6
Go to your doctor if your razor bumps get seriously swollen or infected. Although it is rare, a razor bump can turn into a serious infection.
